We were honored to celebrate with The Resurrection Project (TRP) at their ribbon cutting ceremony of Casa Durango in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago last week! The gathering included a multitude of community members, residents, partners, as well as state and local officials.
Casa Durango is a 53-unit multi-family rental housing development named after the Mexican State of Durango, where many residents of Pilsen came from. The two properties provide apartments for households earning 30-60% of the Area Median Income (AMI), a library/lounge, on-site parking, laundry facilities, bike storage, elevators, security system, and sensory-impaired units. There is also a live bus tracker in the lobby, so residents can wait indoors during inclement weather before catching a ride on the nearby public transit.
Vicky Arroyo, TRP President and COO, spoke to the importance of affordable housing like Casa Durango while families are being displaced from their communities due to the rising costs and lack of housing. A resident of the new development spoke about her struggles and former displacement of her family before being able to move back to Pilsen because of Casa Durango.
